Tell us about the luster, if any, as you tilt it under a light source.

I don't have this coin in hand Coinfrog, sorry. 99.9% of the coins I put on here for Grading I either already own or recent purchase. This coin I'm wanting to buy but wanted some advice from you guys before I took the next step.

Virtually impossible to see the surfaces under this heavy toning. To me, trying to grade this from these photos is just guesswork without much foundation.

Yeah, I figured this might be a tough coin to Grade from a photo because of the toning. But, it is the toning that has me interested in this particular coin.

Congrats on the new addition to your collection! Terrific imaging!

My eyes see a high AU coin due to rub on several of the obverse high points. I base my opinion on the noticeable color changes of the metal in your images - noses, cheeks, hats, etc. The color difference appears to indicate metal loss. In hand, however, things might look different.

Thank you very much!

I think this coin would have to be in hand to have it Graded 100% accurately. Even in my hand, I'm not sure. All I know is that I'm glad I was able to purchase it. I love the toning and seems to have almost no hits.

These two photos are from natural sunlight. It's in a BCW slab, behind plastic.

Nicely toned of the sort produced by decades in a paper envelope. That or the briefest of handling prior caused the high point friction ; a lot like what we old-timers called "cabinet friction". I think it may have then spent some time later in a PVC flip as a few of those color tints and green spotting seem present (hard to grade a photo, even excellent ones like yours !)

Always harder to grade from pictures, when a heavy patina is present, no matter how nice that patina happens to be.
Because it is already in a slab, that also makes it harder to grade from on screen pictures, because it is much harder to get the focus and lighting exactly right, as is needed for any high grade coin.

Third Party Graders don't have either of these problems, and get to examine the raw coin in hand, under optimal lighting.

Because of our difficulties that the TPGraders don't have, I would expect a range of MS opinions.
Nevertheless, don't be too surprised if some say high AU.

Impossible to say if the edge milling feel very sharp to the feel to it, because it is already in a slab.

To my eye,
some slight thinning of the patina on some of the high points, maybe? some tiny hairline nicks or scratches under the patina.
If none, then MS-66
If a few, then MS-64.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Worthy of note is the fact that most example coins shown on PCGS Photograde have a much lighter toning than this one does.

sel 691 - Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if I understood your comment about it already being in a slab, correctly. But, only the last two photos I posted "in natural sunlight" were in the BCW slab. All other photos I posted were not behind plastic/in slab.
