Hello,

I have a question about the boxes that Proof Sets are packaged in. My question is should I always keep the Proof Sets in these boxes that they come in? Also, when buying a Proof Set should I always ask or look to see if the box is included?

Thanks,
Rich

Yes and Yes.

You'll get more on reselling if it has all the original packaging.

If you plan on keeping the proof set together or you plan to sell in the future, OGP(original government packaging) helps with the value. The box also helps to keep the proof set lens from getting scratched. If you plan on breaking the set for individual coins, then the packaging makes no difference.

It is a personal preference that depends on personal intent.

If you are concerned about resale or investment value, then leebreeze is correct, the more original materials you have, the better.

If you are like me and like to build album sets, then feel free to break them out! This is how I filled the proof holes in my Dansco albums.

If you are collecting proof sets and commemorative proofs, but not building albums, then I would leave them in the original packaging.

Again, it is about what you want from the coins!

Absolutely keep the boxes and envelopes and DON'T write or scribble notes on them. As a dealer I always pay less if the original un-blemmished packaging is missing. Most collectors want the set just as it came from the mint.

If you want to display them in your home or office just have a box where you can keep all the empty envelopes/boxes for later use if you plan to sell them.

I know they probably do not add any value (and it really does not matter to me), but I do have all of the original packaging for my now broken apart proof sets. The plastic holders actually came apart rather easily and they are now stored in the original boxes (without coins of course).

And of course if you are breaking up the sets there is always the possibility of selling the packaging on ebay. Especially for the scarcer sets.

Does this hold true for the thin clear plastic packaging that the earlier sets came in? I've noticed a couple of those packages where the silver coins tarnished, and I assume that is a bad thing.....
