1782 1 Real Genuine Or Counterfeit?

fr3nzy1113 New Member United States 6 Posts	Posted 02/28/2020 01:04 am Just got this 1782 Spanish 1 Real coin. Is it genuine? I don't have much knowledge about spanish colonial coins and I can't seem to find a definitive answer. I was looking at numista and it seems to be this coin but the weight seems a little low at 2.9 grams vs the listed 3.38g. Could wear cause that much change in weight? Also the diameter is the same as a modern nickel but the listed diameter is 20mm. Thanks! Report this Post to the Staff

In principle, if the coin had been in circulation for 100 years, it could lose 14% of its mass https://www.persee.fr/doc/numi_0484...m_6_170_3217 But it seems to me that kind of loss would have left fewer details than on this coin. Add wear to that equation, and it's in range IMO. I have a few of these in this condition. Nice coin. Report this Post to the Staff

The width had me worried cuz it looks thin plus the difference in the diameter and weight. Are counterfeits common with these? Thanks. Report this Post to the Staff
