Just got this 1782 Spanish 1 Real coin. Is it genuine? I don't have much knowledge about spanish colonial coins and I can't seem to find a definitive answer. I was looking at numista and it seems to be this coin but the weight seems a little low at 2.9 grams vs the listed 3.38g. Could wear cause that much change in weight? Also the diameter is the same as a modern nickel but the listed diameter is 20mm. Thanks!

I am in no way an expert, or even that bright, but looks legit to me.

I agree it looks legit, and I think you mean Mexico, not Spanish.

I am not sure about the wear question. In principle, if the coin had been in circulation for 100 years, it could lose 14% of its mass https://www.persee.fr/doc/numi_0484...m_6_170_3217

But it seems to me that kind of loss would have left fewer details than on this coin.

This coin is legit. Variations in weight and diameter from the mint were not uncommon. Add wear to that equation, and it's in range IMO. I have a few of these in this condition. Nice coin.

Is there supposed to be some sort of design on the edge like the bigger real coins? The width had me worried cuz it looks thin plus the difference in the diameter and weight. Are counterfeits common with these? Thanks.

i would say that its uncommon for counterfeiter unless in high grade or rare dates, if they are try to fake bullion usually try the 8R version.
