1996 D Cent . I have this 1996 with I believe is a double ear on the left of the other. Around the 2nd ear is a die brake all around it. The Earlobe is very noticeable from the bottom. Any thoughts? Thanks

Well it is not an ear. The shape is nothing like the design of the ear. I know, your thinking it looks like a mirrored ear. But it has nothing to so with the ear. It is as mentioned:

The only thing it could be.

Correct. In order to be a certain die number, the design must match the attributed dies design. Can't be just close, but exact same doubling. The 1972 doubled dies help us to see that fact.
