As some of you know, I mainly collect Roman Imperial Coinage. But I've been able snag a few Republican coins now and again. This one caught my eye as being a Roman Republic denarius. But I can't say for certain.

Pretty high on the reverse-cool-factor meter, by the way.

Thanks Bob - I would have never ever come up with that- especially that reverse. It is cool. Looks like some horn silver on the obverse. Maybe I'll take a stab at cleaning it. I picked this up for next to nothing.

Q. Sicinius and C. Coponius. 49 BC. AR Denarius. Mint moving with Pompey. Q. SICINIVS before, [II]I. VIR behind, diademed head of Apollo right; star below / C. COPONIVS to right, P.R. S. C to left, club of Hercules surmounted by lion's skin; arrow to left, bow to right.

It is a cool coin, I wish I had time to study up on republican coinage.

Well, I got the courage to clean this coin. To my great surprise, I don't believe it was horn silver after all. Lemon juice with a cotton swab cleaned it up nicely. I stopped to examine and ponder whether or not to clean it further. It might be good as is.

Found out some more info on the cin as well. according to http://www.historicalcoins.com: "This coin was part of a large issue of coinage by two supporters of Pompey who had fled Rome upon Caesar's approach to the city. The SC upon the reverse was an attempt to show legitimacy for their coinage via the senate, but this could only be via those Pompeian senators who had fled Rome, too."
