My gut tells me this is supposed to be 1864 and maybe someone change it to 1884 but it doesn't really look that altered - doesn anyone happen to know? Pics attached thanks! (close up is last photo)

That's an 1864 Civil War token. You can see many more like it if you do an image search on "1864 Our Army Civil War Token". Your close up of the date shows that the 6 has a distinct shape from the 8 beside it, particularly the upper part of the digits. Many Civil War Tokens were very sloppily produced. I'm reasonably certain nobody tried to alter the date. It was just made like this.

IMHO, there appears to be some PMD about the date area. Another possibility is that it got "jammed," during the striking process.
