There's a weird shape to the right side of the ear. Is this an error or some type of rot?

Just a stain, which isn't an error.

The difference between a stain and a device is that the stain is level with the devices. A device would be raised from the fields. So if it is not raised, it is a stain.

It is raised, its hard to tell in the pictures. But When looking at it from the sides it does have a black outline so I could see it being a stain of some sort.
