I have several French 10 centimes coins and one has a yellow and brown color. They were minted in copper-nickel but I have never seen copper-nickel tone like this one from 1918. Could it be a different metal? Thanks!
I would suspect that it's just the result of environmental damage. Like US nickels, clad dimes and quarters and UK 20p and 50p coins, these cupro-nickel coins are liable to tarnish if left outside or buried. I once went metal detecting in France and dug up a couple of these that were a deep reddish-brown color.
Thank you for all of the responses. I was thinking it was probably some kind of corrosion but was hoping it was something special. I kind of like the brassy copper look to it. Not the typical gray or green corrosion normally seen on copper-nickel.
