Sigh....again? Let those "graders" prove they provide a service of value--and not just deceptive marketing for their own coin sales.

I"m sure that some of them are trying to provide a service of value. But it is probably very hard for them to break into the market that the top 3 have created, especially when ebay has made a market where fakes and charlatans abound.

Well, I wouldn't want an actual grading business prohibited from ebay because it's not one of the top 3 or so...
ebay needs to distinguish between companies who slab their own coins (or bus. associates) to sell, and those who actually grade coins for collectors by some kind of standard. It's probably an impossible distinction, which is why so much phony grading persists on ebay.

most of these third party graders have nothing third party about them, they are straight dealer to consumer sales so in my opinion they shouldn't be considered certified by a third party since there never was a third party involved in the grading of the coins. A dealer can get a coin in his inventory and look at it and say that is a MS-64 and he may be correct by the grading standards but that still doesn't mean it has any guarantee that is what it is like you have with third party companies and it doesn't matter if he puts his grade on a piece of plastic or on the 2x2 the coin is in when he got it its still not graded by a third party. A third party would be someone that has no interest in the outcome the coin grades and makes absolutely no more off the coin if it grades a P01 or a MS-67. In my opinion there are some self slabbers that get pretty close on some coins that are placed in plastic slabs by the dealer but still that doesn't mean it was graded by a third party company just because they happen to create some sort of special name for their grading service they provide for themselves

This is where their argument breaks down. Without a recognized standard, slabbing is superfluous. Providing large, clear photos of both sides would render this issue moot by allowing collectors to judge for themselves. But--if a collector cannot judge a grade themselves, then a label on a slab amounts to an abstraction for pricing coins--often to the seller's advantage. This holds true for any slabbed coin from a TPG, imo.

Kurt, that's one of the clearest and most lucid descriptions
of slabbing and TPGer's I've read in a long time.
Congratulations.
