I already know what y'all are going to say, put it in the low ball hall of fame, yes it belongs there! But I know there are variations of the date and I was looking at this one. It looks a bit off. Please tell me your thought's

I see 1981, but that can't be right for a Victorian 'bun' penny !
Maybe if I turn my monitor upside down.......... !

Seriously though,
for the 1861 date, Coincraft lists a huge number of varieties, but does not mention anything concerning date numeral variations - apparently, they made quite a few variety hub or master dies.

This coin waaay too worn to be able to identify to which one of those hub or master die varieties that this coin belongs.

Some very detailed study has been done on the huge number of varieties of Victorian Pennys generally, by researchers decades ago, but I guess that you may already be well aware of this.

Again I would say far too worn to get very far with this one.
Best website for GB penny varieties is this:
https://headsntails14.wordpress.com...a-varieties/
They list 28 varieties including proofs for that year. Two date peculiarities are noted - a "6 over 8" and an "8 over 6". I can't see either of those here.

It may be the smudge between the 8 and 6 that makes the final 1 look further away than it should be.

Here's one from my collection for comparison - may not mean a great deal, as there are so many varieties!

Roman 1 definitely - but that coin is so worn, guessing varieties is impossible. It grades 0.5 ( Poor1 is too good for it).
