Cool.
I've thought about toying with dateless buffaloes myself. Have you given any full vinegar soaks? I've seen a few that have turned out pretty nicely but not sure how long to soak them.
Considering how many dateless buffs are out there it would be an interesting way to attack a set cheaply.

Hey Vermont... That's pretty neat the way you photographed the date and the mm. How'd you do that?

Thanks everyone! You have to try clembo, it's a blast. I never tried vinegar Does it work? zoombuff222, I take my digital camera, put on macro setting, and hold my loupe just above the date so it's focused, and auto focus the camera lens right through the loupe! It may take a few tries, but you will get it. Do in a well lit area.

I have also tried Nic-a-date. I went to my local coin dealer and bought all of his dateless buffaloes that had mint marks on the back. Not home right now, but I remember I found fair amount of 1913's and one or two 1914's. If you can find a good buy, try it!

. And as clembo stated, what a great way to put together a budget minded set without breaking the bank!

vinegar takes 5-8 hours or even longer. If ya dip the whole coin it will look and feel of a piece of gray sandpaper. I wasn't impressed. Stick to nic-a-date.

I wonder what happens if you leave the nickel in there for about a month. Would it completely dissolve? Become the size of a dime or a penny?

Vinegar dip can take up to 8weeks to work fully. Most dates will start to show after a few days to a week. Some will never fully show. It works pretty well and doesn't leave the awful spot from nic-a-date. I totally prefer the vinegar if you have the patience.

A while back I found a guy who was selling nice looking restored dates on ebay and he actually sent me a free sample of his work, which turned out to be pretty nice. I emailed him this morning and asked him if he would be willing to tell me what he uses to do this. Of course, he said NO but told me if I'd give him my address again he'd send me a small sample. When it gets here I'll try it out and see what happens!
