I cannot tell whether the columns on the reverse are DD,MD, or none of the above and I should stop staring at it?

Only thing I see is a minor MAD and because of the condition of the coin I would spend it.

@c23, nothing like honest, unvarnished opinions, eh? We give it to you straight here on CCF.

With regard to the columns on the rev, as I recall the design purposefully includes some "doubling" in order to show the three dimensional effect of depth. Perhaps that is what you are seeing.
