I am new to the forum and don't know if you have ever done this. I just recently bought a bag of "old nickels" from a guy for 30 bucks. I Love old nickels and I thought I could go through them and look for errors. It turns out it contained an 1886 Liberty nickel I sent away to get graded at ANACS. Came back AU 58!!!! I just wanted to hear other peoples stories about great buys or finds. Got any?

I bought a 1901-O Barber dime sometime around 1987 as a AU-58 and I sent it in to the old ANACS. It came back as MS-62. [:0]

I have told the story before, but back in the 1960's I would go to my bank in the little town in which I attended college, and ask for silver dollars. Usually the teller would give me 100. I would go to my apartment and look them over, sometimes keeping one. They were almost always all BU, and the mints included P, D, NO, and CC. The teller told me he had thousands I could have, but being a poor college student, I could only afford one or two each trip to the bank. I ended up with about 20. If only I had known then what I know now!

When I was a kid I found a 1955 DDO in the street. I looked at it thought it was cool and gave it away to a collector. Now I know better, I would have saved it.

I've stumbled upon a few deals, or some may say "steals", but the first one that comes to mind is a 1919-D Merc in AU for .50

I haven't found any incredible deals or anything truly wonderful in circulation. However, I did get a pleasant surprise many years ago. I bought a 1979-S proof Anthony dollar for my collection. I put it in with the others and forgot about it for some time. After a while (I don't remember how long, probably a few months), I looked at it more carefully than I had and found that it was the more expensive "Clear S" variety. That was fortunate, since at the time that variety was going for about $80 (I bought it for under $10). Naturally, after discovering this, I had to get the "Filled S" variety to go with it, so I ended up getting both varieties for under $20. Other than this one, I have been fortunate to have bought a few modern coins at the issue price, and found out later that the value had exploded. The best cases of this are the 1998 matte proof silver Kennedy half dollar and the 1999 silver proof set. Also, I have a friend who likes proof sets, and every year since 1999, I have given him a silver proof set for his birthday. I bet his jaw would drop to the floor if he learned how much the 1999 has gone up! I should send him a link to a website that is selling them. Heather

A few years back I bought a PCGS AU58 1854 $1 Gold coin for about $800.00. It looked like an Unc to me so I broke it out and submitted it back to PCGS using one of the free vouchers they gave out for joining. I was stunned when it came back an MS62. I sold it for around $4500.00 and replaced it with a NGC AU58 1854 Type II for about $850.00. I spent the "profits" on a bunch of other coins. Mike
