I have spent the better part of this year imaging my collection and developing a web-page to display it. I found a free web-hosting site and uploaded it to see if/how it looks & works. this is a work in progress, so not all images are available, yet. there may be a few broken links, and there are some sections totally missing. (I am about 99% done with coin images, about 50% done with banknote images, and haven't started with the stamp images). this is only a temporary site (with minimal ads). I am hoping to get a domain name and a banner-less host by the end of the year, but would like to have the site more complete before I "go live." http://sdsimon.43i.net/index.SHTMLany/all feedback, comments, complaints, constructive criticism appreciated. everything is HTML4.01 compliant, so it should display properly in all browsers, but I only know it works in FireFox & IE

I have a somewhat personal question (you folks can feel free to ignore me if you think its too personal)
Why are you posting your coins to a website? What's the intent, motivation, goal, etc...
The reason I ask is that I'm fascinated that there are so many personal websites displaying coins.
Any opinions would be great

Nice clear layout and many interesting coins! I'm only wondering why when I click in the currency section it gets me back to coins.

Ken: While I cant comment for these other guys, I know I have CONSIDERED the idea (of a website) to share the information that I have found. Instead, I decided to go to the other extreme and write a research paper on the subject... But such is.
But yeah, I would suggest the primary motivation is to share knowledge and share images (i do like browsing through pictures of coins that I will never own (ie: German Reich Proben!)). Its also a good way to meet people with similar interests, do some trading, establish contacts, etc....

Thanks for the feedback Zaggy, what I like most about personal websites is seeing the how focused some are like kuhli's or norseman012's.

Quote: Why are you posting your coins to a website? What's the intent, motivation, goal, etc... I. Part of it is ego. I worked hard to build my collection, and I am very proud of it. I am missing a few Croatian coins, but otherwise, I have all of the Yugoslav base-metal circulation & commemorative issues (from 1920-date), including all of the key dates (including the 1974 50 para with a mintage of only 33,000!), all of the Slovenian base-metal circulation issues (and only missing 1 last bi-metallic which is one of my priority purchases as soon as funds are available). Kind of "showing off", but trying not to be blatant about it. II. Part of it is need for completion. By showing what I have, others who have an interest can see what I need to fill holes, what I need for upgrades, etc. III. Part of it is sharing of information. I have a lot of data for all the coins (what I can find), but am always looking for more. With this display, perhaps someone with more information might offer the input. Eventually, I would like to do some miniature essays as a companion. Articles about the notable people, places and events that are displayed on the coins/notes/stamps. Although I have no genealogical ties to the region, through my collection I have become fascinated by the area, and consider myself an adopted child of the Slavic people. IV. and actually, part of it is personal interest. Right now, my financial situation has me pretty much cut off from making any purchases to add to the collection, so since I can't add coins, I can keep my self active and involved by doing this project.

Quote: I can keep my self active and involved by doing this project. This actually makes a lot of sense and is an excellent point. We all hit a point where we run out of cash to buy something so I can see how this keeps a collecting habit going. Also I like where your site is going, I've book marked to watch how it grows. Good Luck

Hi, I'm also building a site w/ my coins collection, the main reason is to share coins w/ other coin collectors, I'ld like to show the coins, but phisically it's too hard and too expensive, while today w/ internet technology it's much more easy, of course it will need some time, but you have also the advantage to show it step by step while you are creating it. For exampel in a couple of weeks I published Italy Kingdom Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I, but now are some weeks I'm stopped just on Centesimi of Vittorio Emanuele III, anyway it will grow ...

heh..... I've started one as well It's still very much a work in progress, but the idea was for anyone to be able to store their coin images and to be a research tool for others looking for a particular coin. Currently it's just a way for me to have a central repository for all the blasted pictures I take of the coins, since moving between work/work/home/work computers tends to make me dis-remember where I last took pictures off the camera card. Usually it's on a machine that I am *not* currently at. Photobucket is nice, but limits the file size unless you're a 'premium' member, which I find annoying. If I have the bandwidth I want to use it, and if I want to peek in ultra-detail at a mint mark I don't want to have to squint and turn my head sideways (with my nose an inch from the monitor!) to do it. Sorry, that was turning into a bit of a rant, wasn't it?! In any case.. I'm sure I'll eventually find a broader use. It's too bad we're all putting in the same effort.. why not do it on one site?

Easy access...some of my coins I haven't actually laid eyes on for 15 months or more. I have a detailed photo of it on my web site. I know its in the safe...somewhere.
