To begin, going by photograde standards it's consistent with a grade of very-fine. A value would be anything near or below $90.00. The rays variety was a two year only strike, ending in early 1867 over perceived striking problems. The 1867 is where the "with rays, without rays" term comes from. Can't tell exactly if yours is the high dollar 1866/1866 re-punched date though.

A very nice Shield nickel. This is a nice series to pursue despite the lack of popularity.

I'm bothered by the stars-over-rays thing too. Comparing to the PCGS photos at https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin...5c-rays/3790 show some differences around "OF" -- to the left of "OF", the rays look closer to the "S" in "STATES"; to the right of "OF", the rays are roughly centered between the "F" and "A" in "AMERICA". The OP's rays are also a little closer to the letters. Presuming that's the right page at PCGS and there are no major varieties on the reverse, some of the differences could just be wear but...

Interesting. The OP coin definitely seems to be from a different hub than the one pictured on the Coinfacts page. I knew there were two designs used, one for the business strikes and one for the proofs, but this is not the proof design. There are definite differences in the placement of some of the stars relative to the lettering. Easiest one to see is the star over the E in CENTS. On the Coinfacts image it is slightly right of the center of the E, on the OP coin is is centered over the upright of the E.

As far as I can tell it is at least an EF grade and I like that coin.
