I hope someone can identify this coin/token. My wife had it, she's gone, so can't tell me. I gave her collection to granddaughter (12), who is crazy about coins. It is bronze or brass, about size of a US quarter, picture shows front and back. Edges are smooth. The markings look like stylized pictographs of some language I've never seen before. The art looks like a type of cereal grain plant. Thanks for any help. Silvertip.

Hi, this is a common 5 yen coin from Japan from 1961.

It's a very attractive coin, and in Japan, it's the first coin you put into a new wallet because go-en (5 yen) means auspicious luck :)

Here's the Japanese mint site

wd1040 - Thanks for the reply. I guess you can tell I'm a rabid coin collector - not! My grandaughter will be happy with the ID, especially because it is a good luck piece. She has 2 of them. I'll tell her to put one in her purse for good luck.
