Hello, I was curious if someone might know if there are many of these around, and what might have caused it. the 1 in the date is barely there Most of the LIBERTY is blurry and the IN and the ST in TRUST are as well. The reverse is normal. Many Thanks for any help.

It looks like the coin was struck with a Grease Filled Die. That caused the missing features and overall soft appearance.

What you have is a partially Grease Filled Die, commonly known as a "greaser." They make for a great conversation piece, but not a great deal of added premium I'm afraid. The heavier the grease, the more value (in general terms).

I wondered if this was a polished die issue, but the 'IN' was the clincher that this was not the cause. It is a Struck Through Grease error
