Here's one I pulled out of some old crackly brittle flip pages I put together as a young kid and even younger collector. I'm sure I kept this from granny's piggyback or got it in change, origin sketchy.

Tiny planchet one cent, it's mostly all there less obverse legend and the heft of a usual cent.
Diameter is only 18 mm and thickness is about a half mm...weight is 1.27 gram..very light
Appears to be the right metal for a cent just small

Any thoughts appreciated and as always thank you community

It's had an acid bath, sorry to say.

Cheers, Bill

It looks like the prime recipient of a science experiment with acidic compound.

ok acid....I did think of that, but I have seen acid eroded coins before and they didn't resemble this one specifically but the devices have kept much of their sharpness in mine
Is that typical of acid eroded coins any of you have seen? And, what acid exactly are we talking about?

Coke coin...have to try that in my spare time and get back to you

thanks for replies

hi Ironhorse. I agree that this penny has had an acid bath. do a search for acid penny and you will see many more examples. the markers are: coin is thinner, coin is smaller, the details get mushy and letters/numbers are thinner as well. I also posted an acid penny years ago and learned to tell the difference here on this forum.

check out my post on split planchets to see some examples of coins struck on under weight planchets.

I have no problem believing it's been in acid and has been dissolved....after looking around I've noticed every state of decay.
I'll give your thread a look rob
