One of my favorite coins are the flying eagle and Indian Head cents. The set of 1857 to 1909-S was one of the sets that I've wanted to complete for years. And while I completed the set last year and have been upgrading when a coin comes in and is nicer, it still didn't solve a long term project that I wanted to do. Mu current IHC set consists of a few duplicates ( IHC are one of the few coins I like to have duplicate of). All are stored in 2 by 2's. Any that didn't make it into the 2nd set or the main set, I gave to a fellow collector that currently has about 50% of the series.

Last year, I was able to pick up a flying eagle and a 1902 and I really liked the way they looked in a slab. Yes I know its crazy. I picked up another last Friday and this along with Doctor Bunzies Proof thread really made me want to do a long term project, and that project is to try and get most of the IHC and Flying Eagles in AU/MS. I know I won't get all as several are over a $300 cap that I want to keep each coin under, but the vast majority will be doable. So what do you all think? A good long term project? I'm nuts for trying. Or should I upgrade the littleton folder and give up on slabs?

Great so far. Now it's time to find the 1956 Eagle. Although no place in you set for that one.

It's an enormously ambitious project, with a solid AU 1877 setting you back $4K+ to start. And there's no point in even trying starting on the set if you can't see yourself buying the '77.

Frog, yep that 77 will kill me. I'm thinking of just doing the 1880 to 1909 (minus the 1909 S), I checked and other the early 1880's I can find most in AU/MS for under $100. Would be nice to have DL Hansen bucks, but it may be a limited set. And like I said, long term project.

I have seen people split a set before. As you said, 1880 up in the AU or higher grade, and 1879 and below in F or so. That ends up being a nice looking set if you are picky about the coins. Lift the limit on that 09S though. That would be a great cap off to the set.

I'll second doing the early years in F, then once you're caught up you can start upgrading the late ones.

It's a really nice set, I like the way it presents in the album and the coins look well matched as a set. You obviously took some time and effort to put it together and it shows!

I really did try hard to get these to match, I wanted the coins to be comparable quality. That's one of the reasons I want to keep this set.

Even if you'are going to target just the 1880-1909 set in AU-MS, you will never be satisfied without the '09-S - which you can find in a nice AU TPG holder for less than a grand.
