Hello everyone,

I need some help identifying this worn Roman Republic As:

bronze
30mm
19.83g

obverse: Janus, laureate, with "I" above
reverse: prow right, "ROMA" below, "I" in right field, the above field is well worn and appears to be empty except for the structure on the prow

My best guess is that this coin resembles RRC 197-8B/1b... Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Going through Crawford it might possibly be Crawford 189/1. Sydenham 370. Wish there was more detail, but because of the wear it's difficult to confirm.

Wasn't this the type of coin that led to them calling "ships or heads" rather than "heads or tails?"

Thanks for your reply echizento. I did a lot of staring at the coin today. It does look like there are traces of the "A" and the "S" from "P.BLAS" in the upper field.

Correct. The Romans may not have been the first to invent the concept of tossing a coin to make a decision and/or determine the will of the gods, but the coins the Romans used to do the tossing - large bronze asses like this one - had this design for so long, "caput aut navis" (heads or ships) became the Latin call-out on a coin toss, even long after the heads-and-ships design was abandoned.
