My dad's collection has a few of these very shiny steel cents in it that I assumed were mint state when he gave me the collection as a kid, but, as I've gotten more into coins in the past year or so, I've gotten more suspicious of them. Thought I'd start with the least suspicious, to my eye, since if this one is plated, the rest 100% have to be as well. Edited by SamCoin 04/02/2020 12:09 pm

Thanks, Bobby! To go from the least suspicious to the most suspicious, what do you think of this one? I'm very skeptical of the shininess on the scratches.

What should I be looking for on the edge, John?

The roughness of the surfaces makes me think the old zinc was removed with an acid etch and then replated.
On the edge, if it hasn't been replated you should be able to see the different layers of metal, zinc/steel/zinc, if it has been replated it will be all one color. The blanks for the steel cents were planched for steel strip that had already been zinc plated so the punching exposed the steel on the edges (and smeared the zinc layer from one side partially over the edge. So one lyer of the zinc should be visible, the other layer might not be.)

Thanks Conder! They are indeed re-plated. Disappointed, but not surprised. Glad to finally know for sure.
