I mostly collect ancient coins and silver bullion. I have some graded/slabbed Morgans. I decided to buy a few gold American eagles .10 oz. An ebay seller had stock photos of PCGS MS69s with no verification numbers. I think it's kind of a marketing gimmick to sell "First Strike" or "Early Releases" since the US mint addressed this. But I got one anyway. When it arrived it had a verification number and I noticed damage on the obverse. I was surprised PCGS would give such a high grade for a damaged coin. Maybe they don't examine coins very closely or this is acceptable? See pics of seller stock photo and close ups of the coin I got. I don't think I'll ever buy another graded/slabbed coin unless I see it in person or the seller has actual good pics of the exact coin. The label on the reverse is different than the seller photo. It says "Delivered within first thirty days of initial release." Big deal.

I assume this is damage and not struck through? If struck through, should I keep it or send it back for exchange or refund? Thanks for any opinions.

Wow, that is no MS-69 as far as I can see. Though I do personally believe that rumour of the TPGs when it comes to mass submitted modern bullion, that a random percentage are given a MS-70, and another is given MS-69 whilst giving the coins a minimal viewing, this is not a fact, this is what I believe to be true based off of my own experience, and after ready and having many discussions have yet to see definitive proof to either side. That said this I do find extreme, any chance you could link the PCGS verification?

Pretty sure the grading companies don't even look at these moderns anymore. They just use a random number generator to decide between a 69 and 70.

I'm not very computer smart, but here's what I got on the PCGS site.

https://www.PCGS.com/cert/38817609

And here's an image of the coin I got. At a glance you can't see the damage. It is a small coin. But at an angle in the light you can see some of the markings without a magnifier.

I wonder how PCGS would respond if this coin was brought back to their attention

Regardless, it's slabbed bullion.

Thanks everyone for looking at this loser. It's on its way back for a refund. Go ahead and post it on the overgraded thread.

Yes it's just bullion. I'm all for grading/slabbing old coins but for modern bullion not so much.

Everybody be careful. There's a debate if people should be wearing masks in public. I wear one when I go out.
