Hi all, this is my only second post and I'm trying to understand grading. I assume all my coins are crap, but I wanted to post this 1964 D dime to get opinions on grading. This will help me understand baselines going forward. I know the black spot on the lower right of the obverse is a detraction - but by how much? Thanks!

I feel it's very hard to grade silver coins from photos, have you visited PCGS.com and PCGSPhotograde.com? Best to tell us what you feel the grade would be and see if others here would agree with you. You'll find PCGS has some very informative videos on grading...
If you want my grade, I'd put your coin @ AU55 to MS62

Thank you both for the replies. I've visited the PCGS website, but I think I need to spend some more time there really digging in. I've seen dozens of videos where people show they're graded coins, but I'm sure there's a world of difference between seeing them on screen and in person.

It seems like for monetary purposes (as in to sell) people really only grade coins that are mint state. Are there any advantages to getting more common coins in the AU range graded other than preserving them for sentimental purposes? Sorry for the basic questions!

If they are common, no reason to get them graded. As a general rule: a coin needs a retail value after slabbing of at least $150 to justify all costs involved in having it slabbed.

AU-58 Details . Your coin looks wizzed ( cleaned )especially the obverse . Your second question ,getting a common au coin graded is not worth the cost . A common coin would need to be at least MS-66,67 with a value of over $100 .

Thanks to you both for answering my questions. I think I'm just excited as a noob to have something sent off to be graded. I'll sit on my hands until I actually have something worth grading. I just think the slabbed coins just look so cool.
