A friend of mine is starting to put together a nice set of Newfoundland 20¢ & 50¢ pieces, nothing really Mint state but is trying to aim for fully readable, fully struck pieces, and while I was helping him pick out some pieces I decided to join him in acquiring a nice Newfoundland collection as well, but I have decided to start with the dimes and fish scales first as I imagine these will be the hardest to get a hold of.

Anyway this the first piece I have purchased, not including a few other common dates that I have purchased, and actually only the second coin I have ever bought on ebay.

I paid about $50, so retail for a F-12, but it does look quite original and with a mintage of 40000 I wasn't too worried about the price.

What would you all grade this one, aside from the scratch between the 7 and the 2 and at the 12o'clock point Feild on the reverse I am actually very happy with this one, and I will be posting pics when I get it in person.

Thank you and have a great day

Nice coin with natural toning. I like it.

It is indeed a great time to be a NL coin collector. The rarer 5 and 10 cent issues are very hard to acquire, like you said, mostly because they are smaller and they got used more so than their higher value counterparts. Most of the old ones 5 cent issues were probably circulated to death. That said, there are Fifty cent coins that are very hard to find in nice condition too. It's hard to know where to spend your hard earned money starting out. My advice, start anywhere you can find a high grade coin for a great price and add it to your collection. The order you acquire them doesn't matter and there may not always be deals out there for the years you are aiming at. Also, go slow. You can get the 'bug' and spend too much trying to amass a collection. Take your time, be choosey, and let your collection build as you find bargains and make deals on coins you can't afford. ebay auctions sometimes net great coins for unexpectedly low prices.

I'd have to go with F-12 on this one.

Cheers and happy collecting!

She came in, and wow, I was happy with how it looked in the sellers pics, but it actually looks better in person, rims are more full, the braid detail is much more full and there is even a bit of lustre in the protected areas

Here are my attempts at showing a more accurate visual of how it appears in person. I think it might make a VF, maybe.
