hi everyone,
this is a hongkong 1877 large cent error struck, the character "A" of the name from queen "VICTORIA" was struck as "V", I think it is very rare the a coin with such error came into circulation. but I did not find this typ in any coin catalogue, does anyone have some further informations about this piece? will be nice if someone can help, thanks.

hmm interesting. It is possible that that may be an unknown die variety, or is also may be some sort of filled die. This would explain the lack of the horizontal bar of an "A."

Very interesting, because several Canadian coins from the 1870s show this variety. Some UK coins do as well.
At least for the Canadian coins I know, the theory is that V punches were substituted for A punches--probably by accident.
There are several Heaton mint coins with the A/V variety, and if this HK cent was minted in Heaton, I would not be surprised.

I've taken your photo and enlarged for more detail. I don't see any sign of a broken punch or filled die. I think it may be an A/V. I like this coin! .

He still doesn't say if he bought it in the knowledge it was rare or if this came out of a dealer's bin?

Hi KurtS,
thanks for your post, but sofar as I know, the heaton mint has its own mintmark "H", just look at the hong kong large cent 1901, it has two variants, with and without "H", the typ with "H" was minted by heaton, and the same by 1905 hong kong large cent.

@NumisMattyUk:
i bought it in germany. thanks

btheltic,
Thanks for the info on the mint mark; I was unsure where to look on HK coins as I don't own any.
Yes--the Heaton mint usually shows an H, but sometimes it was omitted. I have a Newfoundland coin without the Heaton mark.
Wherever this coin was minted, I think it's an A/V variety--which often go for a premium. Nice find.
