This is one I actually bought, knowing fully well it was a fabricated error, so the dealer let me have it at a reasonable price. It is one of the better ones I have seen.

This is called a "Texas penny", named after the phrase "Everything is bigger in Texas". It is created by pressing or hammering a zinc plated cent between two pieces of hard leather. It gets stretched out rather evenly and nicely, but usually develops a flanged edge. The previous owner, prior to getting into the dealer's hands, had submitted it NGC - and didn't believe the outcome. The dealer had to buy it in order to secure the entire collection, which did have legit errors.

Some years ago, CCF user Wade posted something similar, with the same date: http://goccf.com/t/181661

Another others have shown up:

If it looks out of round, that's because it is. North-south is 20.2 mm, while east-west is 19.7 mm

Most you see, both in US and Canada, are done on copper-pated zinc cents. But, with enough patience and care, this process can also be done with a solid bronze cent. This one, from the same collection as the 1998 I posted earlier, although as "post-mint damage" as it gets, is one I absolutely love, because it signifies just what someone can do, with enough determination and time.

The weight is normal (3.22 grams), but it is stretched out almost to the same size and thickness of an 1859 large cent - a whopping 24.2 mm. A great conversation piece!
