Hello,

I came up with a FREE method of pricing from ebay based on what I already bought. I keep forgetting prices are based on supply and demand as well as the fact that my local coin dealer has other expenses to pay and therefore might charge a dollar or two more. Here is my method, tell me what you think.

Using the Constitution Bicentennial Dollar as an example. Highest price on ebay was $27. The lowest price was $25 making the "Average" price $26. "The Red Book" listed this coin at $18. So, I took 25% off of that based on suggestions in a previous post. I got this coin for $24. My price range was between $13.50 and $26.00. That all being said I'll take the prices from "The Red Book," subtract the 25% and the "Average" ebay price and pay in between, which so far has worked for all of my coins. I have either paid right in the middle or have gotten a deal on all of the Modern Commemorative Coins I have purchased so far. I have not yet over paid for a coin, which is what I'm afraid of. As for Proof Sets, so far I have always paid BELOW the original issue price.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks,
Rich

Looks like a well thought out plan.

If you are buying coins at shows (or a local dealer), do not forget to add the shipping charge when recording the ebay prices.

Many moons ago, I did that with slabbed vintage sports cards. I would calculate 60% of listed catalog value for the slabbed grade and then would place bids that did not go over that (including shipping).

I only won maybe 1 in 50 auctions, but now, several years later, I have a very nice collection that has appreciated very well.

The important point is to make that method automatic. This way you won't have nagging second doubts and can at least be sure you paid a fair price.

G'day,
As I see it, there's no point buying on-line, unless you get a good price.
If you end up paying CV, you may as well have put on a nice shirt and gone to the shop.
Freight/shipping/postage can turn an apparently good deal into a very ordinary purchase.
And, there's no substitute for knowing the market, which Smitchard's method certainly does.
