I am new to coin collecting, instead of fearing money right now I found a way to love it... it has been so much fun. So I came across this penny, and no it is not the prettiest but I looked under a 10 power and this looks WAM D to me. I searched online and I cannot find another. Any thoughts? *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

to CCF. The gap between ME looks wide,on a WAM the gap would be more narrow. John1

Look like a WAM to me. on a Close AM the gap between the A and M would be much smaller. Someone else - please give your expert opinion!

I do not think there are any 1998-D WAMs. John1

On a Wide AM the gap between the AM and between the ME are equal. On this coin the gap between ME is noticeably wider, this is a Close AM. There are no known Denver Wide AM's and frankly it would be impossible to have them after 1997. In theory it could happen before 1998, but none are known.

The FG tells the tale, it is a normal closed AM. The coin is worn but keep in mind as they polish the dies the devices get smaller and smaller widening the gaps between the letters.

Please take at least one picture perpendicular to the face of the coin (head on). Sometimes pictures at angles are necessary but not in this case. Agree that it is a Close AM.

Better photos will not help, nor the spacing on the "FG" on this coin... there are NO WAMs on the 1998-D. to the CCF!

Thank you alll for your responses. I was unsure myself because I read there were not any others. I did actually find another one that was posted on here. Curious as being new to collecting, why is it that is would be impossible to have an error like this, and that it would have to be done prior to 1998?

The Denver mint did not produce any WAMs in 1998, therefore we can conclude your coin, being a 1998-D, cannot be a WAM. Philadelphia mint yes, Denver mint no.
