Is the 1909 penny the only penny that has the VDB? This is a 1943 Steel Penny that I got from an auction on ebay of 1000 pennies. cost me 10x face value to buy them from a man claiming to be 85 years old. It has what appears to be the VDB and on the reverse has what looks like maybe a 9? under the R in AMERICA.

On CCF, all Lincoln Cents are considered Modern coins, so I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

Please review the forum section descriptions, so posts are made in the correct section.

i am sorry. I guess that answers my question. the 1943 penny does have the vdb initials. I guess I was hoping it was some sort of error or misprint or something. I apologize for the mistake.

The initials VDB were on part of the 1909 Cents on the reverse. It wasn't added back until 1918 and then on Lincoln's shoulder on the obverse. Die polishing may cause them to be less obvious.

Could be a die gouge or something under the plating. That coin is replated. Not original
VDB is still on the should, even on shield cent
