Whenever I buy coins I try to be somewhat particular
I might even say ...... discriminating !
I generally take a pass on the shiny silver
I usually take a pass on harshly cleaned bronze too
Corrosion is a big turn off
and as far as anything "tooled"
........ fuggetaboudit !

But if I find a nice bronze with an attractive patina
Well I confess to being a bit of a "sucker" for those
(as long as the price is right !)

But the current Great Plague has definitely put a hit on my finances and much like the last one (H1N1) in 2009 it required me to take an inventory and decide which of mine own little children I might take to the market for exchanging
For 'The Coin of the Realm' ..... so to speak
Helps buy the groceries
I spent most of Friday afternoon sorting through my trays Checking off ones current
Separating out ones I had purposely skipped over when listing them for ..... "adoption"
When I go on my buying sprees I almost always find some coins that I want to keep around if only for a few months ...... or years !
So after sorting everything I sat down to organize by category and or "Ruler"
I have always had a weakness for the larger bronzes of Geta and Caracalla
But both together ? Well the more the merrier !
My sorting now revealed that over the past few years I had acquired four handsome Æ's of Markianopolis with Caracalla and Geta facing
They all ended up in Limbo sitting scattered through my trays
"lemme think about it awhile" category
Hmmmmmm Two black patina ...... two green patina how nice
I had already decided to pick out one of the 4 for keeps
Now it seems like this is seriously getting out of hand
but there they were side by side ..... my two 'greenies'
Oh no
Another die match ?

OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!

This is the third time now in the last year
But it got even worse when I compared the other two

OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!
OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!

Zut alors !
I started out wanting to pick out one for keepers and I usually need only a poor excuse
But now I am staring at triplets ?

Well I still have the odd man out
Thank Jupiter the reverses don't match !
My paranoid tendencies would definitely get the better of me

OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!

Well I have now wasted more than enough of my time
(and yours too !)
Time to get back to my labors .......

Oh but one last thing ......
Between sorting through all my orphans I checked up on my filing for "Pandemic Relief" from the State
Yahoo ! There really is a Santa Claus !
After twenty five years being gainfully (self) unemployed I thought the end was near and the jig was up
Well it probably still is ......
but at least I get a three month reprieve !

"Happy Days Are Here Again"
FORTVNA REDVX !

They are nice. Die matches are a vary valuable resource.

Oddly enough I was sorting through some of my coins after a new purchase and I stumbled across something similar but slightly different.

I specialise in the eastern denarii of Septimius Severus. Needing to narrow this down a bit, as that isn't a narrow enough focus, I have several sub-collections within that. On of these is a strange series of odd shortened obverse legends ending COS II. There are a variety of theories out there about them (part of the COS II series 'cos then end COS II, part of the IMP II series as they are very close in style to those, a separate branch/travelling mint etc. etc.) but no conclusive evidence about anything in particular. I gather them whenever I can and have examples spread across 9 different obverse dies. I won't bore you all with them all but it is relevant to this thread.... honestly....

I recently obtained this coin:-

Obv:-IMP CA L SEP SEV PER AVG COS II, laureate head right
Rev:- IOVI VICT, Jupiter, seated left, holding Victory and sceptre
Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194-195
Reference:- RIC -. RSC -. BMCRE -

OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!

It was only after it was at home and photographed and being added to my database that I realised that it was a double die match with another example in my collection but the other is so corroded that they look quite different until you put them side by side....

OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!

So a double die match.... see... almost getting relevant....

but then I looked at the other examples in my database from this obverse die and lo and behold.....

Obv:- IMP CA L SEP SEV - PER AVG COS II, Laureate head right
Rev:- BONI EVENTVS, Fides (Bonus Eventus - RIC) standing left, basket of fruit in right, two heads of grain in left
Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 - A.D. 195
Reference:- BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC -

Three of them.....

OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!
OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!
OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!

and just for completeness. the other two reverse types that I have from the same obverse die

Obv:- IMP CA L SEP SEV - PER AVG COS II, Laureate head right
Rev:- BONA SPES, Spes standing holding flower and lifting skirt
Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 - A.D. 195
Reference:- BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC -

OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!

Obv:-IMP CA L SEP SEV PER AVG COS II, Laureate head right
Rev:- VICTO-R AV-G, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm
Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 - 195
References:- BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC -.

OH-No-!--Not-Again---Little-Green-Men-From-MarSkianopolis-?-3-Of-Them-!

Obsessed! Who? Me?

FVRIVS, always love reading your posts. Never seen a triple match before, I would keep them as triplets. Always nice to find a neat surprise.

Great matches
What a marvelous feeling too
I am afraid this is one of those fringe benefits of becoming an "old fossil"
We all eventually get to see the reruns !
I now have several
My only intentional pair I matched up here on CCF
Several years past a Mssr "Large Cent"
I can't even remember his real name now
Posted a Maximianus London follis he had recently acquired
When I compared to my own ........
Sure enough
He had stumbled upon the same seller and bought just one
I was grabbing them by the dozens !
Selling everything that wasn't nailed to the floors to finance the weekly auctions
He graciously agreed to a trade
To show my great appreciation I made it sweet for him too
One top grade Max
One top grade Diocletian
both London
One Constantius I and one Galerius
from out of Trier
Both lesser quality but still decent enough for amusement purposes !

Four for the one
But of course I still got the better of the deal
Twins !
Previously I had matched two Constantius I
These had apparently all come out of the same hole in some guys garden so it wasn't too surprising

But to stumble upon them blindly
It is a great thrill
Showing some wear they all likely traveled very different routes
Only to land 1,800 years later beside each other
Long odds !

I happened to be browsing ebay for some Caracalla coins and spotted several die matches to these for sale through the well known "hi price - low value" if you know who I mean. All have the same obverse die and come from two different reverse dies as far as I can see.

You wanna bet a denarius he bought them from the same source as I ?
Large volume sellers usually buy in bulk (by the kilo !) and resell at auction
Small time clowns like myself pick up whatever falls through the cracks
Mssr "Absurd Price" operates on a much larger budget than I !
Currently I am more concerned with making my zero percent credit card balance disappear
I have until December before the 'Usury Rates' kick in
Once I have that under control .......
Thank Jove for the "pandemic aid relief" that landed yesterday !
Then I will consider buying for my personal amusement

But thank you for your consideration !
Having triplets to care for will have to satisfy my maternal instincts for the time being
