Hi!

Totally new to coin collecting. I mostly collect only coins in circulation but I've been given a coin that was listed a BU (Brillant Uncirculated) at a coin store (Imaginaire.com if you know it). I am wondering where this coin would grade on the grading scale. Since it was listed as BU, would this means it starts in the MS range even if it's not 100% perfect or it is just seller marketing and there is a precise line between AU and MS ? (Not saying my coin is AU or MS state, just wondering how all this works)

The kinda white spots at 2 oclock and 8 oclock are light reflection, you can see that they moved according to the second picture.

Thanks a lot in advance, coin collecting seems pretty fun :)

PL64

BU means Brilliant Uncirculated, no more no less.
That description could include MS coins or PL coins.
Yours is one of the latter.

Thanks a lot for the quick answer!

I'll take up some reading on how to differentiate PL coins from standard coins, they look quite similar!

The best thing you can do is look at a Pl set in the set and your 1964 side by side with a jewelers loop. The planchet before it is struck is highly polished in a PL set to a much higher degree. I have pulled cameo coins out of fresh mint rolls for circulation that the back ground comes in many conditions. Some look washed with a liquid solution, most come with small lines and others come with heavy lines like specimen back grounds.
Great coin
(something)-64.

Your coin has several things to look at more closely. On the reverse, it looks like the beads from the left leaf down to below the date have filling in them, and the rim is deformed (partial railroad rim?). The rim on the obverse is also slightly deformed; possibly showing it's not a proof-like. I would expect this wouldn't happen on a PL. It also looks to have an extra little point on the top of the second A in CANADA.
I think there's a planchet flaw or struck-through error at the lower right of the queen's bust.
