The material is through and through. Also the coin is real Dark for some reason.

Just a damaged coin unfortunately, someone took a dremel or something to it exposing the copper underneath the nickel plating.

The darkness is due to damage too, either environmental or from extreme heat.

But is seems like a gloss like almost transparent material.

The gloss could be glue residue, you can try using acetone and see if it soak off, but with all the scratches, it is a damaged coin.
