I bought a 1957 Ceylon 5 Rupee from a seller that I have done several hundreds of dollars in business with in the past. I know for a fact that other CCF members have also bought from this seller. When I received the coin I was disappointed to see that it had obviously been cleaned. There were parallel hairlines all over the coin. No big deal, they must have made a mistake in listing or something. The seller took it back no questions asked.

Today I was perusing the sellers items again and found the same coin that I bought a few weeks ago:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CEYLON-1957-5-R...AU_W0QQitemZ190262862393QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item190262862393&_trkparms=72:1205%7C39:1%7C66:4%7C65:12%7C240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

There is no mention of the cleaning in the description. In fact, they bumped up the grade from XF when I bought it, to XF-AU in the new auction. Typically I would leave a neutral, but I'm beginning to think that this was no mistake. What do you guys think?

With the volume they do, a returned item probably just got mixed in and mixed up. It was then regraded and relisted.

If you returned it, got your refund, and the transation was otherwise friendly/cordial, then you should leave a positive feedback or nothing at all.

I think that might be possible. I would e-mail the seller to remind them why you returned it; then await their response before doing anything else regarding the feedback.

I dont think I would leave a negative if I got my money back from a item I wasn't pleased with and didn't have any problems doing so. I may not leave any feedback at all but they kept their end of the bargain when they refunded you your money so that pretty much ends your and their transaction in a satisfactory manner so I see no reason for a negative.

I suspect that they know they will eventually sell it to someone with less knowledge than you and since they do not pay any shipping in either direction, then why not repost it as many times as necessary to make the sale that they desire? The fact that ebay sellers can avoid shipping costs regardless of the situation puts them in a good position to set aside ethics. Putting a falsely graded coin "back on the shelf" so to speak is not something that should be taken lightly.

I hope that is not what is happening here. Here are some suggestions for ebay (that I know will never happen):

1. For each seller, create a permanent record of returned items, along with the reason they were retunred. Relying on feedback to garner this info does not work.

2. Give the buyer the power to demand that shipping costs be reimbursed when the return is due to the misrepresentation of the item.

Feedback is for evaluating your transaction with the seller, and nothing else.

I thought you weren't allowed to post your opinion of the grade, only the 3rd party certified grades.....

bmanofnbc, showing a grade of a raw coin is allowed...just not a numeric grade in the title.

From your thread:

Quote:
***Note***
If the coin has not been certified by one of the authorized grading companies, the coin may only be listed as raw or uncertified. Raw or uncertified coins are permitted for sale on ebay, as long as:

- A numeric grade is not included in the title of the listing, such as MS-65, VF-25, etc. A numeric grade may only be included in the description of the listing.

And on this thread, I agree with SuperDave. The feedback you leave should only be related to your transaction.

Yeah, you really ought not use your feedback to complain about how a seller does business. That's what your freedom of choice is for. There's nothing wrong with emailing the seller and letting them know you were checking out the listings and noticed a coin you just returned as cleaned listed a grade higher and with no mention of the cleaning. If they do something positive, then there's no need to take your business elsewhere. If they leave it alone or tell you that grading is a matter of opinion, then I urge you to consider suspending your purchases from the seller and letting him know why.
