It is stamped with what appears to be "PATTEN" and it has a hole that slightly goes through the coin. I would like yall's thoughts on this coin, along with is it a damaged coin now or an error/variety. Thanks!

to CCF. Counter stamped and PMD. Not an error or a variety.

Interesting counter stamp - you might try researching the word on Google.

This c/s is listed by Brunk, # P-245. In 2003, he listed one on an 1851 large cent. I have one dated 1851 and another unknown date in my collection. This is a maverick, issuer unknown. Given the font size, I suspect that he may have been a blacksmith or otherwise engaged in metal work. The original stamp may have been preceded by an initial or two. I've occasionally researched this issue over the last twenty or so years. While I've found a few potential issuers, I'm as yet unable to make a match.

BTW ..... to the CCF!
