Hi!

As a canadian, I don't see a lot of UK coins, but I found a five pence coin in my coin jar. I looked online on numista to see if it was a standard one and if there was any commemorative issues that year, etc... and what I found online on numista, would not fit my coin.

My coin is a 1997 coin, it should have 92 beads. I already have a 1992 five pence which does have the 92 beads. According to Numista, the 1992 and 1997 coins are suposed to be the same. The 91 pearls version being only on the 1991 coins.

Below, I posted a closeup of my coin with all the beads grouped in pack of 5, we can clearly see that there are 91 pearls not 92. I also added yellow lines on the second I of II and on the E of REG, and according to the numista picture, both the number of pearls and the alignment would fit the 1991 description, but it is a 1997 coin. Could anyone help me understand why that it?

My 1992 five pence coin fits the Type C description perfectly, and the 1997 should be the same but it is not...

Thanks a lot :)

Heya!

The Royal Mint has, for some time, been known to use dies to the end of their lives - largely as a cost-cutting measure. This has resulted in no end of minor varieties, especially on the bi-metallic £1 coins, which seem to undergo little to no quality control. This being said, obverse dies (in particular) being brought 'out of retirement' was not unheard of, especially in the early Elizabeth II copper issues, and there are specialised collectors who hunt these. Your piece appears to be a case of an older obverse which was pressed into service in the later '90s.

An interesting piece, but unfortunately far too specialised to be of any real commercial value at the moment. If someone ever does a detailed study of modern British coinage (as has been done ad-absurdum with pre-decimal issues), there is a chance that it may become sought after by a small group of very specialized collectors.

Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot for the detailed response!

I will hold onto that coin for now and see what the future might hold. I am not collecting for money, and I don't think a piece in that quality will hold that much value even if it's rare, but if in some years it is confirmed that it is indeed a rare piece, it is always fun to have this type of coin in a collection!
