Hi all,

first post. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify? This was found by my dad some years ago now, in England. I've searched through a lot of the web and found the most similar coins are either from saxon or norman periods, but the distinctive image on the front I can't find anywhere.

Any help or advice appreciated!

Thanks,

@nodz93, first welcome to CCF. Second, I have some bad news for you. See the "WRL" counterstamp on your second pic? I think that this means that your coin is a replica by the Westair Reproductions Limited, a British replica-maker. We have only seen their work a few times on CCF, but according to those previous threads, their replica ancient and mediaeval coins are sold in museums and tourist traps all over Britain.

Yes, sadly a replica by WRL. It would be a very interesting coin if genuine - I believe it is of a Eustace Fitzjohn penny, minted during the Anarchy under King Stephen 1135 to 1154 in York. Ref is S1316 in the Spink book. Value if genuine would be £1750 in Fine and £6250 in VF!
Even without the WRL it is clearly a copy - too thick and wrong colour.

I checked out the Westair site. Interesting business history.
They do reproductions of lots of other things besides coins. All are clearly marked, so as not to deceive anyone.

I am perfectly happy to buy a clearly marked reproduction coin for a dollar or so, for a coin type that is otherwise unobtainable.
To be very clear to myself, all such coins get included in my 'black' collection of fake coins.
