Recently I was reading about the 1990 Cdn "bare belly" nickel, where the RCM apparently over-polished the beaver's belly section on one die resulting in a "no fur" condition, and winters have been very cold for those beavers. I've looked at countless 1990's and never found one...but the other day I was looking at some 1998's from a roll and discovered one of them had a similar over-polished condition in the belly-neck area:

Bare-Bellies

Bare-Bellies

Here is a normal "warm" beaver 1998 for comparison:

Bare-Bellies

Later I discovered similar defects on some 1977 nickels but nothing as clear as the 1998 I found. At the RCM in Winnipeg they said they weren't aware of this variety or what might have caused it. If it really is caused by over-polishing of the die, and since it doesn't seem to be restricted to one year, I wonder if this 'defect' exists in other years and other coins. Is there a '67 bare-skinned rabbit? A '79 missing leaf penny? A '08 part-antler caribou? Has anyone heard of this defect on other RCM coins?

the 1964 bald beaver is the one you really want its not just a bare belly the whole beaver has no fur
like it was rubbed off. the 1990 is not nearly as impressive but would still be a good find.

Frost Cross, to answer your question about the close ups, its simply the same shot cropped using Irfanview. You can do this with any digital pic and get grainy but viewable results.

I've seen this over-polished die syndrome in other years since my FP on the subject. I was astonished to learn during my RCM tour in Winnipeg that a die wears out and needs to be changed roughly every 8-hour shift. So the RCM must go through thousands of dies per year. This would greatly increase the odds of new die errors or excess polishing.

The QC inspector at the RCM checks each bucket of coins at each press once an hour, looking at 2-3 coins with a loupe on both sides for about 10 seconds. If she finds errors, the line is stopped and a large part of the production removed for destruction. So if the inspector misses something or an error occurs on 50-100 coins in the bucket (but not on the 2 she pulls at random), all those lovely errors could make it into circulation!

I suspect there are plenty of other errors on Cdn circulation coins yet to be discovered.

Thanks Malibu!Interesting information there! That QC process would certainly leave room for errors to slip by Thanks for posting that bare belly...It's currently added to my list of coins to watch out for.

I have seen other nickels like this going on eBay- a dealer from the Maritimes specializes in error coins and has a lot. Sorry, I don't recall his name.
