Also to be sure and check every single coin for errors

Just kidding, man I wish I had that much to sort through, I'd have a blast going through all that.

Welcome, from a fellow newbie!

to Community.

It is an exciting find and an adventurous journey to go thru thousands of Cents, what a wonderful gift from your grand parents!
I bet the deeper you get in the bucket the older the dates are going to be. So, as mentioned hold off on cashing them in, patiently start going thru them and pull the goodies out!research, study, learn the valuable ones and post it here after each find

Don't get crazy excited. I recently went through over 5000 Lincoln wheat cents. I probably put 10 aside as having more value than face or melt. Basically stuff pre 1930 and the 1931S are valuable. Vast majority isn't. Good luck tell us if you find anything.

You can look up each coin. as you see the date look up the errors for that coin. By the time that 5 gallon bucket is empty you should have a good idea what to look for. Well, at least a fair amount.
