Hello! My grandparents were in their mid 80s and collected all of their change for YEARS. I am sorting through gallons of pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters, but I'm not sure what to keep. My mom was changing them in for cash, but I noticed some of the coins date back to the 40s, so I asked her to stop, for now. I've been trying to learn and sort, but it is a bit overwhelming. So, I guess I'm asking what coins are valuable and should be collected?

Well done on putting the liquidation on hold. You are doing the right thing for your Mom. Hopefully, she will be patient while you figure this out. You will get lots of help/input here.

1)Quarters & dimes before 1964 have silver content which is worth a minimum of 10 to 15 times face value depending on where you sell them.

2)Half dollars- 1964 and earlier have the same minimum value and 1965-1969 are worth 5-6 times face value.

3)Wheat cents are worth 3-5 cents each but yours, because of the story that goes with it, probably 5-10 cents each.

It will take a while to learn which minting errors and varieties can bring a good sum and can require a lot of effort and knowledge.

That is the stuff dreams are made of for us as collectors.

to CCF. Tuff question to answer in a short answer. Cent: pre 1959,25¢-10¢-50¢-$1 coins pre 1965. Errors.

I have heard of Coin Roll Hunting**,
but
bucket hunting?

MY guess:- 24,280.

I would like a dollar for every paint bucket of that design I have seen. They are common over the whole Planet.

** I will other insightful comments to the CRH'ers.

My nephew brought (sold) me a bag of pennies that I couldn't even lift !! Unfortunately they were from Michigan and many had at least some corrosion from the humid climate. Many Canadian pennies also, that went to other great-nephews for their help in sorting/counting. Lots of fun during that summer vacation.

Welcome to the Community and baptism by fire. My guess is 23,612 pennies. Start with a box of zip lock bags and write on the outside the years 1982 thru 1940 and then bags for 1939 to 1935 and 1934 to 1930, 1929 to 1920, 1919 to 1909. Don't worry about mint marks until later. Wear gloves (cotton is best) Your hands will start to get filthy and it will rub off on the coins. Your goal is to get the coins to a manageable and reasonably organized condition. Once everything is sorted you can start to focus on key dates in the bags, one coin at a time. Have fun! .

Thanks for adding info on the nickels T-bop. I had no idea.

Hopefully, when you get to the bottom of the bucket there isn't a note that says
"Skip these because we already searched them."
