I have a PDF of Roman Imperial Coinage but still cannot find an explanation for the difference between the Valens Folles RIC IX Thessalonica 16b and 26b.

I have one of these folles, specifically M/*A/TES, but I don't know if it's 16b or 26b or how to tell the difference.

Anyone know? Can anyone help?

LRB's are the ancient equivalent of LWC's.

Looking through wildwinds examples....This is just my observation....
16b has no symbols in the right or left fields and depicts the workshop at the end of TES in the exergue, whereas the 26b has the workshop and control marks in the left and right fields and the base mint TES in the exergue without a workshop symbol following it.....

This would make your coin description a RIC 26b type xxx

As already noted, M/*A/TES is mint mark xxx on page 171. The only difference between 16 and 26 is that the mint mark on 16 must be one of those listed on p.168. For 26, it must be one of those listed on pp. 169-172.

I was confused as it says "GLORIA RO-MANORVM 16, 26, 31" on every page 168-172.

I thought that meant 16 and 26 had the same mintmarks, OCRE thought that too.

So is having 16, 26, and 31 at the tops of each of those pages a mistake?

If you look at the listings themselves, #16 specifies p. 168 only and #26 specifies pp. 169-172. The table heading indicates that it lists marks found on 16, 26 and 31, all GLORIA ROMANORVM types, but not that all marks are found on all numbers.
