I'm not sure of the script being used here, it looks like Thai but something seems off.

It has been suggested that this could be Cambodian/Khmer script

Pretty sure you right about it being Thai script.

The year on the back would be 2517 or 1974 c.e.

I suspect it is a medal for the raising of Ariyavangsagatayana VIII to Supreme Patriarch of Thailand but it's just a guess.
