I am primarily a coin collector, but a friend of mine asked me to help him find out about a dollar bill he recently received.
The bill is a 1971 One Dollar issue and the serial number in the upper right has the last digit dropped about half way down the rest of the digits in the number. In other words, the top of the last number (a 3) is about even with the center of the rest of the numbers in the row. Only the right serial number is affected the rest of the bill is what you would normally expect to see.
We are wondering if this is a common occurrence or is this a rarity?
Any information is greatly appreciated.

Pictures would be helpful but there is no 1971 series $1 so you might want to check on the series date.

Thanks, I have not seen the bill myself so pics may not be possible but I will check the series date again.

Boy did I have it wrong.
The bill is a 2001 and it is the lower left SN# that has the dropped down digit.
He is going to bring it over this weekend so I can get a pic to post.
Thanks

Sounds like it is a "dropped number" or what is sometimes called a "dropped digit"

It would definitely sell for a premium, sometimes they leave the serial number off completely. There are collectors that specifically look for these types of notes.
