A while back I saw an e-bay listing for a prototype of a new coin they called the Amero, that is supposedly going to consolidate US, Canadian and Mexican coinage and currency. It sounds a little far-fetched to me, but then so did the Euro when it was first introduced. Anyone seen, heard or have an opinion about this?

My opinion is that it is unlikely. I think it is more likely for Mexico and Canada to adopt the US$ then for the US to adopt a different currency.

They are the brain child of Daniel Carr. I coin designer that is highly respected for his designs and craftsmanship. It was done as a joke and has turned into a conspiracy theory for some.
Be sure to check out his other work on the Rhode Island and New York quarters when ya get the chance. Am I missin any other designs?

I tend to agree that it is unlikly that the US would ever get away from the 'good ol' dollar. My wife collects all things copper so I bought her a 2008 20 Amero coin with the satin finish. It is a beutiful piece of artwork. For $40 I don't know if it was a good deal or not, but she sure likes it.

the Amero coin has nothing to do with US currency, it is just something a member here made himself (Daniel Carr) and everyone that saw it thought it had to be some conspiracy that the US Govt was trying to slide under our noses which definately wasn't the case. Daniel has had to make several statements through a few different medias explaining the coins because of all the uproar that was going on about them

Actually the conspiracy theories came first, then Daniel made up his Ameros after which the conspiracy nuts "grabbed" them, claimed they were made by the US Mint and were "proof" that the "Real powers behind the government" were planning to go ahead with the new currency unification. Quote: For $40 I don't know if it was a good deal or not, but she sure likes it. You also say it is a beautiful piece of artwork. Isn't a beautiful piece of Art and a happy wife worth $40? Sounds like a good deal to me. Quote: Be sure to check out his other work on the Rhode Island and New York quarters when ya get the chance. Am I missin any other designs? The Maine quarter is also based on his design. He also had two of the semi finalist designs for the Sacagawea dollar. Several of his other State Quarter designs were also better than the accepted ones. I still think he doesn't do a very good job with faces, but other than that his computer design and computer program that cuts the dies directly from the design are amazing and he does a far better job than just about anyone else I've seen.

G'sday, if my memory serves me correctly, the "Amero" is raised as an issue on CCF about three or four times each year. Peter

The answers to the question are listed above.
However, I don't think the "North American Union" is a conspiracy theory. Better hope it never happens.
At any rate, Daniel Carr is a master at what he does. I have some of his work in my collection.
