NGC - Coin of the Day: On July 6, 1887, David Kalakaua, ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii, was forced to give up much of his authority to Hawaii's Legislature. Kalakaua, the second-to-last monarch of Hawaii, is shown on this 1883 Hawaii Silver Dollar designed by Charles Barber.

500,000 of these Hawaiian dollars were produced in 1883. After the overthrow of Liliuokalani and the subsequent annexation of Hawaii by the United States, the Hawaiian coins were largely withdrawn from circulation and melted; the silver dollar, owing to its silver value, was most affected by this policy: 453,622 were melted. This left the dollar with a net distribution of just 46,348 business strikes along with a small number of proofs.

PCGS Coin Facts has these Hawaiian coins being minted at the Philadelphia mint. Everything else I have read has these being minted in San Francisco (w/o mint mark).

Does anyone have a good site to find more information about Hawaiian Dollars. I have seen almost nothing on grading them. Just looking at images on HA, Stacks, etc.

In 1883, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars were struck at the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia for Hawaii. These coins display a bust of the King David Kalakaua. The sizes of the coins match those of United States coins and, although the Hawaiian coins bore unusual Hawaiian denominations, they were valued the same as their U.S. counterparts.

The answer is in Breen's Encyclopedia. The 26 proofs were struck in Philadelphia. The regular mintage coins were struck in San Francisco. It appears that PCGS's coin facts and the individual listings are incorrect for MS coins.

Any information on grading would still be appreciated.
