A recent question got me to thinking about a coin's value (Morgans and Peace) when buying or selling. In either case what do you expect in price (selling or buying) when taking the coin's melt value for a common date Morgan or Peace that is AG, G or harshly clean/polished?

I found that common date Peace dollars in AU sell for a small premium over melt, so any worn one will probably sell for melt. Same will liberty dimes and Roosevelt's. In the cases of those pick the best looking ones.

Also, keep in mind those silver dollars are only 90% silver. Not a full ounce of silver.

Good point about the 90% which is why I through out the melt value as a base number to work off of.

I'd be buying under melt for those.

I've never been big on Morgan's given the high premiums people are willing to pay, therefore creating the market pricing that IMO is high. Don't get me wrong, they're beautiful, and will possibly put together a date set one day ( but very slowly given the price I am willing to pay for them). But I digress.

Morgan's tend to hold the highest premium of the " junk silver". These premiums fluctuate with the market. I personally would never pay over melt for culls, and not much of a premium over melt for your common F-XF.

I sold off most of my Morgan's privately when silver spiked the second time in August for well over melt, which to me is crazy. Looking at recent sold listings, looks like it hasn't changed.
