*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***I have nine 1972 LMC DDOs (one DDO-002, five DDO-003s, one DDO-007, and two DDO-008s) all in MS rd or MS rb condition that my dad pulled from circulation when he was a kid. I'm wondering if 2x2s are good enough to store these long term, or if I should invest in some air tight storage holders for them. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** Edited by SamCoin 05/13/2020 3:37 pm

Depends on your quantity. A buddy of mine has dozens and dozens of 1972 FS-108 in Gem Unc and he tubes them because he has so many. If you have only a few (say less than 15) then flip them.

Put them in a zip lock, and suck the air out with a straw, then seal.. cost 25 cents a bag, just like a vacuum sealer..

@John1 doesn't seem like a great solution, since a lot of valuable coins won't benefit from the air tight capsule. My question was mostly whether these coins will keep their redness in 2x2s or if they will degrade over time if stored in them indefinitely.

I'd think if you keep them out of the light, generally, in a slip they will stay just fine. I dislike airtights only for storage reasons and that you can't label them easily not that they don't work, but I have many coins in slips and totally trust they will not tone down.

Oh wow, very good information, TropicalBats. I had no idea copper toning was a photosensitive process. I will have to look up more about the chemistry involved, since it sounds interesting. Can slabbed coins tone down if stored in sunlight, or do they require a combination of light and air contact? Completely agree on the annoyingness of not being able to label air tights!

They're fine right where they are.
