Hello again all, I am going to an auction next weekend and I am looking to fill a hole or two in my 7070. Since I dont know the series very well, and they can get pricy, (and are ofter of questionable authenticity) I figured I would seek the assistance of my more knowledgeable friends here at CCF. On the auction bill are: 1. an 1834 capped bust half dollar in what they call VF. 2. an 1834 Capped Bust quarter in F. With O over F in OF on reverse. 3. a 1798 Draped bust Dollar with the Heraldic Eagle Reverse in XF this note is with the pic "B-31, BB-115 Die crack. Rarity 5" Here are the pics. Do you agree with their given grades? What should I expect them to go for? Do they look cleaned? etc etc etc. No, I don't expect to be able to afford the 1798 Dollar, but you never know... 1. 2. 3. Edited by MorganNoob 11/15/2008 3:19 pm

Was the dollar advertised as damaged/repaired? It looks it in the picture.

No, but I don't think the auction house will even guarantee their authenticity, all they do is give an approximate grade and take a couple pictures, and let some fool bid on it. I would rather not be that fool, that is why I am asking questions. I can get a larger pic of it if you think that would help...

You'll have to see what the dollar looks like, but I personally wouldn't buy it unless it was really cheap--it looks like a problem coin, holed repaired.
The quarter is nice but looks like there's an old scratch down the face unless that's a quirk of the picture. If I liked it in hand and could live with the apparent scratch and the light rim dings, I could see at least $110. It's better than F and look like it could go VF-30 or 35 (details with the scratch?). If someone bid $165 I'd let them buy it.
The half is my favorite (of course). Overton 115, Rarity 2, unlikely but possibly 115a, R.4 but a closer examination would be required. I like the color from the photo and I think it's a higher VF that can't quite claim Extra Fine. The gap in the reverse rim between 2:00-3:00 by the "M" is a quirk of the die. I wouldn't have any trouble paying $90 for her, but I would probably draw my upper limit line sooner than most as this is not a date I covet at this time. If I saw someone paying $130 I wouldn't think badly of their effort. Much more and I would likely opine they could have exercised a bit more patience.
All the standard caveats apply--for what it's worth/my opinion/grain of whatever--hope it helps. Good luck and keep us posted!

Doesn't the bust on that dollar look as tho it was 're-carved'?

Thanks for the help all. I picked up the half for $90, and in-hand I agree that it is almost EF, but just not quite... now it fills another hole in the ol' 7070... The Dollar, which was authentic, and not repaired, (it looked great in hand) was almost stolen for $1300. I think the quarter went for about $130 or $140, but I again agree with HABIB, not crazy about it in-hand, or pics. I picked up a ton of stuff, I will get some pics up asap.

Good deal on the half! And smart move letting the .25 go; you'll find another. Can you explain why the dollar looked so dinged up in the picture after seeing it in person?

Lol, that is funny. It does look better in-hand then in the photos, but I have too little experience to comment on authenticity. But it sure looked real to me. Though the E in Liberty did look like something might have been done to it, but again I dunno, I guess I will have to wait and see.

That 1798 Dollar threw up a red flag with me as well.

But I have no experience with the draped bust dollars. Still, that hair detail and the overall surface is fishy, and the chin is off. It looks pressure-cast, patina was applied, and then put under a buffer--but I could easily be wrong. Here's the 1798 dollar the guy in the other thread is comparing this coin to. What I notice is a total absence of those markings/breaks around the date. And, what's up with the chin and eye? Doing a quick check, I think the coin above most resembles the B-115 obverse. The cracks around this die state seem to match, although eye/chin details on coin #3 are a bit off.

I think you got a great deal for $90. Heck I'd have even purchased that one and agree it might be the O-115A. A closeup/detailed picture of the reverse would be needed, especially the 50 C area to make the determination.
A very nice coin though...

Quote: Interestingly, the apparent new owner of the dollar showed up on another coin forum. Thought some might be curious. It is a nice forum also. Gee.. nice place they got there. Think I'll stay here
