Hi All,

Just wondering what grade to assign to this. I'm trying to learn grading, so any thoughts on how you arrive at your grade appreciated.

Thank you!

Very little rub or wear. Photo lighting makes it tough to see the actual color. AU-58.

One area to look for is the breast feathers on the reverse.
These will show wear first.

I think that the AU-58 grade is correct.

I have a 1911-D as well. It is about the same grade. But what is this? The "D" is repunched? I must do some research.

Low end Unc (62/63) in my eyes. The fields are void of contact marks. Nice coin!

Thank you, all! And thanks Matthew for the diagrams.

No, it's not a D/D. Just a bullion coin I've had for years, but I was curious about the grade. It seemed to be a decent grade, and I'm getting into grading. Trying to learn!

My 1911-D is repunched. Sorry yours is not. I inherited quite a few gold coins in all denominations and still have not learned the grading well. Just picked out the nicest for my type sets. Common Gold? Junk Silver? To a collector no coin is JUST bullion!

Visible under a 5 power loop IF you know that it might be there. A 17 power loop shows it clearly.

BudJillett, a bit of advice from a dealer YEARS AGO!
"Silver wears away, but gold wears DOWN."
So. on a gold coin, if an area looks pushed in or flattened (smushed) it cannot be uncirculated.
I wonder how true this is...

I don't own one of those - yet - but I think that is one of the nicest overall (both sides) engravings to ever come out of the mint.
The nicks on the rim might keep it out of MS range so I agree with the above...
Nice Coin! I'd be very happy to own it.

Luster doesn't show up very well in these pictures, hand held may be different.

Yes, mtuma3, and the current Bullion coins (obverse) are a pale imitation of the original.

I agree with that!

If you are going to accumulate gold bullion with a very nice numismatic twist, you can do no better than with the original St Gaudens Double Eagles!
