Howdy folks. First post and of course it's a newbie wanting an opinion:) I picked up an 1842 Mexico 8 reales from ebay and it flunked the magnet test as well as being underweight at 23.43 grams:(. I checked the specific gravity and came up with 8.52. Way below silver and even copper, maybe bronze perhaps? Obviously a fake, which might explain the X strike on the obverse. My calipers are broken, but it looks slightly small compared to an 1893 8 Reales. It looks legitimately circulated however so I wondered whether it is a modern Chinese copy or an old fake worth keeping? Any opinions?
Welcome to the world of Contemporary Circulating Counterfeit 8 Reales. That coin is NOT modern. It is collectable variety. The type is fairly common. I refer to the coin as the "Pierced Leaf" variety. It is part of a large family of related dies. Notice that one of the cactus spines (upper right cactus pad) pierces one of the laurel leaves - reappearing at the center.
The type is quite common in the northeast part of the US and Canada. As a child in New England I can attest to finding many of them years ago.
I recall that coin being auctioned. It sold May 9, 2020 for $23 or so. That is a fair price based on rarity.
