Greetings folks. Just a quick inquiry on this Maple Leaf I acquired. I have a lot of Maple Leaf's, but the only reason I got this one was the what I think is some really nice toning. And 32 years old.

But being in a sealed RCM pack from 1988, is this really natural toning? Or was there a problem from the Mint upon sealing this? Maybe a Silver mixture issue? Heat problem during pressing? I'm just throwing stuff out there. I have no idea. But I like it nonetheless. It really pops nicely and the colors in-hand are fantastic. More iridescent than pictures.

If it's just a one off natural thing with nothing other than nice toning, that's fine. But my main question is to know how a mint generated coin, sealed shortly thereafter, can have these dramatic color changes. Yes, I have seen many coins such as US Mint coin sets that were sealed in their Cello's, with crazy toning over time. Maybe this is no different. Though these Canadian RCM sealed packs are beefy. So not sure what could have gotten inside to do this. Or WHAT was Inside at sealing?

Feel free to grade if you like as well. I may slab it just because it looks good. Probably no premium save a collector who may look for toned mint state coins (unless someone says this is actually damage).

OK. Enough rambling. Here it is:

Wow... that is beautiful!! Great photos too, as capturing toning on a mint state coin is not an easy thing to do! For some reason, 1988 is the year you find crazy toning on Silver Maple Leaf coins. Here is another example:

I know somebody who collects these (the owner of the link I posted) and certainly to him, there is a premium on these. You probably want to remove it from its original plastic sleeve at some point...

Thx Silver / SPP. Appreciate the link Silver. I see he had it graded and slabbed. I am going to do the same thing. Helps preserve it to. I will send it sealed as is, to a TPG. That way they know it has never been handled.

But I agree...this lady is off the charts beautiful. In-hand even better than pics. I guess as you said the reason for the toning is a 1988 issue, and that's fine with me. Probably a Mint metallurgy issue that caused the Silver to be prone to toning. This multi Russet color is truly killer. I may just keep it after grading. Money is not an issue in terms of needing to sell. Though in the hands of a dedicated collector as you noted, it can be preserved and given the care and presentation it needs.

I'll say this...if this was the result of what they could call technical damage from the Mint...then we need more damaged coins. lol. jk.

Ok...thanks a bunch for the input.
